Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Plainville Fire Company has run this festival for decades, and it has the exact small-town texture you want: a volunteer fire department, a town park, nearly a hundred craft vendors, food trucks, a car show, and the actual headliners floating overhead.

There are two completely different trips hiding in one event. The evening version is the popular one: get there for the balloon glow, where tethered balloons fire their burners in the dark like giant lanterns, then fireworks around 9:15. The kids leave wired and asleep within a mile.

There is a version of this trip where you set an alarm for 4:45 AM, and I'm telling you it's the right version. A dozen balloons inflating at sunrise beats every screen your kid owns.

The morning version is the secret. Saturday's launch is at 6 AM, which sounds unreasonable until you're standing on wet grass watching a dozen balloons inflate from bedsheet-flat to ten stories tall while the sun comes up. Almost no crowd. The kids talk about it like they saw dragons wake up.

In between, it's a proper town fair: amusement rides including a giant slide that will consume every ride ticket you buy, games, kettle corn, and enough craft vendors that someone in your party will buy a wind spinner.

The one rule that matters: every launch is weather-dependent and the pilots decide. Wind that feels like nothing on the ground is a no-go at altitude. Set expectations in the car so a scrubbed launch is a plot twist, not a meltdown.
